What are ChatGPT Ads? How advertising in ChatGPT works
Since 2026, ChatGPT shows sponsored ads to part of its users. This guide explains what they are, how they work, where they're available and how to decide whether to test them — based on OpenAI's own statements and dated reporting.
What are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are advertisements that OpenAI displays inside ChatGPT. They appear below the end of an answer, are labelled as sponsored and are visually separated from the response. According to OpenAI, ads are chosen based on the context of the conversation, run on systems separate from the model that writes the answer, and cannot change what ChatGPT says. Businesses buy them through OpenAI's Ads Manager.
Timeline: how ChatGPT Ads rolled out
- 9 February 2026 — OpenAI starts showing ads in the United States to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans.
- 5 May 2026 — a self-serve Ads Manager (beta) opens to US businesses of all sizes, as reported by Axios.
- 24 August 2026 — ads expand across Europe, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
- Since then — advertiser access through Ads Manager continues to roll out by country; OpenAI's help center keeps the current list.
Status as of September 2026. This is a young channel; check OpenAI's documentation for current details before planning a campaign.
Who sees ChatGPT Ads?
Ads are shown to logged-in adult users on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Subscribers to the paid plans do not see ads. OpenAI has also said it will keep offering ways to use ChatGPT without ads, including paid tiers and a limited free option without ads.
How ads are placed and matched
An ad appears after ChatGPT has answered, not inside the answer. It typically combines a headline, a short description, an image, the advertiser's name and a link to a landing page. OpenAI describes the matching as contextual: the topic of the current conversation determines which ads are eligible.
In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, personalised advertising was switched off by default at launch. Ads there are matched to the current conversation, along with coarse signals such as approximate location, language and device; users can opt in to more personalisation. Reporting from the European launch also noted that geographic targeting in Europe started at country level.
What OpenAI says about answers and privacy
OpenAI has published principles for its advertising. The ones that matter most for advertisers are these: ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers; conversations are kept private from advertisers and user data is not sold; users can control ad personalisation and clear ad data; and OpenAI says it does not optimise ChatGPT for time spent.
For advertisers, this has a practical consequence: buying ads does not make a brand appear in answers. Visibility in answers — being mentioned or cited when someone asks about your category — is a separate discipline that depends on genuinely useful, clearly structured content.
How ChatGPT Ads are bought
Campaigns are created and managed in OpenAI's Ads Manager. Trade press covering the launches reports auction-based buying with cost-per-click and cost-per-thousand-impressions options. The earlier high minimum spend for launch partners was dropped when self-serve access opened, which makes the channel accessible to smaller advertisers.
Because the platform is new, benchmarks for cost and performance are still forming and vary by category. Treat published price ranges as indicative, and plan a test budget large enough to reach a decision.
Is your business a good fit?
ChatGPT Ads tend to make sense when people research your kind of purchase through questions and comparisons — for example considered B2B services, software, travel, education, finance-adjacent products (within policy) or higher-priced consumer goods. They make less sense when your buyers search for an exact product and buy immediately, where search and shopping ads are already very efficient.
- Do your customers ask for advice or comparisons before buying?
- Is there a landing page that continues that conversation, not just your homepage?
- Can you measure conversions from a new channel cleanly?
- Can you set aside a separate test budget without starving proven channels?
What good ChatGPT ad creative looks like
The ad appears right after a helpful answer, so it competes with that answer for credibility. Copy that states plainly what you offer and why it's relevant to the question tends to fit better than aggressive promotional language. The landing page should pick up the same question — a page designed for the conversation's intent, not a generic homepage.
Measuring results
Set up conversion tracking before launch, define what counts as a result (a lead, a booking, a sale), and compare cost per result against your other channels over the same period. Reviewing a new channel against established ones — rather than in isolation — is the fastest way to decide whether to scale, adjust or stop.
How this guide was researched
It is based on OpenAI's official documentation and the trade coverage linked below, checked as of the date shown. We do not have our own ChatGPT Ads campaign data yet — once we run a test, we will add the findings here and label them as such.
Questions
Do ChatGPT Ads influence ChatGPT's answers?
According to OpenAI, no. Ads are shown separately below the answer, run on separate systems and cannot shape, rank or change responses.
Can advertisers see my conversations?
OpenAI states that conversations are kept private from advertisers and that it does not sell user data.
Are ChatGPT Ads available in Germany?
Ads began showing to users in Germany on 24 August 2026. Advertiser access via Ads Manager is rolling out by country; check OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page.
Can an agency guarantee my ad placement in ChatGPT?
No. Placement is decided in OpenAI's ad system based on relevance and bidding. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed placement or influence over answers.
