ChatGPT Ads vs. Google Ads: what's different and when to use which
Google Ads responds to what people type into a search box. ChatGPT Ads respond to the context of a conversation. That difference changes how you plan, write and measure campaigns. Here is a side-by-side view, as of September 2026.
The short answer
Use Google Ads to capture demand from people who already search for what you sell. Test ChatGPT Ads to reach people earlier or in more considered moments — while they ask questions, compare options and plan. Keep proven Google campaigns running and give ChatGPT Ads a separate, limited test budget until you have comparable data.
Side-by-side comparison
| ChatGPT Ads | Google Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers an ad | The context of the current conversation | Search queries and keywords, plus audiences on other Google networks |
| Where it appears | Below ChatGPT's answer, labelled as sponsored | Search results, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps and more |
| Platform maturity | Launched 2026; Ads Manager in beta | Established for over two decades |
| Targeting in Europe | Contextual; personalisation off by default at launch in the EEA and Switzerland | Keywords, audiences, location, device, schedule and more |
| Buying | Auction via Ads Manager (CPC and CPM reported) | Auction with many automated and manual bid strategies |
| Measurement | Developing | Mature conversion tracking and GA4 integration |
| Effect on organic results | None — OpenAI states ads don't influence answers | None — ads are separate from organic rankings |
Search intent vs. conversational intent
A search query is short and often explicit: “web design agency Munich”. A conversation carries much more context: the budget someone mentioned, the problem they described, the options they already ruled out. That context is what makes conversational ads interesting — and why copy written for keyword ads often feels out of place after a detailed answer.
Creative and landing pages
Google search ads are built from headlines and descriptions designed to match keywords. In ChatGPT, the ad follows an answer the user has just read, so clarity and relevance matter more than urgency. In both cases, the landing page decides the result — but ChatGPT traffic especially benefits from pages that answer the specific question that led there.
When to use which
- Clear, high-intent searches (“buy”, “near me”, product names): Google Search and Shopping remain the core.
- Considered purchases with research and comparison: test ChatGPT Ads alongside search.
- Brand awareness in a new category: combine video (YouTube, social) with ChatGPT tests for question-led moments.
- Local services: Google, including Maps, is usually the priority; ChatGPT targeting in Europe started at country level.
How to test ChatGPT Ads without hurting what works
- Keep existing Google campaigns unchanged during the test.
- Allocate a separate test budget and a fixed review date.
- Build one or two landing pages that match the conversations you target.
- Track the same conversion actions on both channels.
- Compare cost per result and lead quality — not clicks alone.
How this guide was researched
It is based on OpenAI's official documentation and the trade coverage linked below, checked as of the date shown. We do not have our own ChatGPT Ads campaign data yet — once we run a test, we will add the findings here and label them as such.
Questions
Will ChatGPT Ads replace Google Ads?
Not in the foreseeable future for most advertisers. They reach people in a different moment. Treat them as an additional channel to test.
Are ChatGPT Ads cheaper than Google Ads?
There's no reliable general answer yet. Costs depend on category, competition and the auction. Reported bids from launch coverage are indicative only; run your own test.
Can I reuse my Google Ads copy?
As a starting point, but it usually needs rewriting: the ad follows a full answer, so plain, relevant copy fits better than keyword-stuffed headlines.
